Folkboats
The Nordic Folkboat was designed in 1942 at the request of the Scandinavian Sailing Association, who set a competition for budding yacht designers to design the perfect cheap Nordic 'one design' sailing boat. No individual won the competition, but the five best proposals were amalgamated into one single design by the naval architect Tord Sunden. The Scandinavian Sailing Association owns the licence to the boat and the first Nordic Folkboat was built in Sweden in 1942.

The Nordic Folkboat is now one of the largest keelboat classes in the world, with huge fleets in Scandinavia, Germany, the UK and USA. Recently a resurgence has seen our fleet grow in Australia, here in Brisbane we now have a small fleet of boats regularly raced and cruised, with plenty of space for more like minded individuals to take part and be part of the growing class. So even though the Nordic Folkboat is over 65 years old, it is still a perennially young and popular regatta and touring boat.

The simple rig and sails handle all kinds of weather, but best of all strong winds. When other boats are taking shelter in the harbour, Folkboat sails and performs without any problems.

Having been produced for over 65 years the Nordic Folkboat has been the type of boat many families started their sailing career in - and later chose to return to, while some never leave it at all. Try sailing one and you will see why.
